Siemens works smart with Meter Provida to increase engineer efficiency
Formed in 1997, Siemens Metering Services is an accredited meter operator, data collector, and data aggregator, and one of the UK’s largest independent providers of utility services. It offers a range of metering services for commercial, domestic, and industrial energy use, as well as at national transmission level.
Siemens Metering Services has over 500 engineers installing smart meters for independent energy companies as part of the smart meter rollout. With an extensive program to deliver to a fixed timescale, any visit where a meter cannot be installed due to a lack of equipment or tools costs all parties significant amounts of lost revenue, and sets back an intensive schedule. Wanting to reduce this, and understanding the efficiencies that technology can offer, Siemens Metering Services selected Meter Provida’s WorkSmart app to place purchasing power in the hands of its field engineers.
The app, accessed via a mobile device, allows engineers to manage their own stock of consumables from a range of over 350 stock lines. From knee pads and dog repellent to screwdrivers and drills, an engineer can order all the equipment needed to complete installations for same day despatch if ordered by noon. Meter Provida then delivers to the engineer’s location to an agreed delivery schedule.
The WorkSmart solution is part of Meter Provida’s Slipstream Data Platform and offers class leading reporting capabilities. As part of the initial implementation, Siemens Metering Services’ Operations team sets spending limits either by team, location, or individual engineer, as well as deciding on the frequency or quantity of orders that can be placed.
With detailed reporting on demand, the business has visibility on spending patterns and can plan budgets, monitor purchases, flag unusual buying patterns, suspend purchases, and amend limits.
In addition to the cost savings the WorkSmart app brings to installations, it can also replace the need for an internal stores function, and the administration and reporting required for it to function effectively.

Using the WorkSmart app removes the need for its engineers to travel to buy consumables, and with Meter Provida delivering the complete range of equipment from a single, central location, the number of miles in the supply chain is reduced significantly.
